On February 27, 2020, the Special Events and Community Outreach team hosted Fulton Science Academy (FSA) students in Council Chambers as they participated in The Amazing Shake

The City was proud and honored to play a role in this exciting educational opportunity.

What is The Amazing Shake? It is a competition, now national, developed by The Ron Clark Academy as a way of teaching students about manners, discipline, respect, and how to conduct themselves in a professional environment.

This annual event tests students during a fun, memorable experience in which they’ll learn about networks, roles, and introduces them to a variety of different career paths.

Among other things, fifth graders at FSA – who will participate in The Amazing Shake – learn the mechanics of a proper handshake, the practice of “working” a room, and generally how to present themselves professionally. These are all skills that will make them better poised to take advantage of opportunities today and in the future.

The event began in the morning of Thursday, February 27, at Fulton Science Academy. The private school’s campus is in Alpharetta, though 20% of its students hail from Milton.

During this part of the contest, each student spent a few minutes at a time interacting with more than 40 business professionals. After each student moves on, he or she received scores by the professional based on handshake firmness, eye contact, common sense, confidence, and related attributes.

The 12 students who rate the highest, based on these professionals’ assessments, advanced to the next phase of the competition.

That’s where Milton – specifically elected officials, city staff, and City Hall’s council chambers -- came in.

The City of Milton hosted the “Soap Box” portion The Amazing Shake. Each student gave a two minute speech that was judged by a panel of staff members, and a Council member, at City Hall.

It was our privilege to host this group of talented, kind and respectful individuals taking part in such an exciting competition!
