Welcome to the City of Milton!

Welcome to Milton and the “Best Quality of Life” in Georgia!  We are excited that you have decided to start a new business in our city!  As an accessible and responsive government, we partner with our business community.  We recognize the value of your investment and want to be supportive and assist you with this venture.

We Are Here To Help Simplify the Process of Starting Your Business

City Hall is the first stop for economic development and business assistance in the City of Milton. You’ll also want to check in with the Community Development Department which includes our Building Official, to assist you in understanding what you need to get your business up and running as smoothly as possible. There are a few specific requirements our City’s businesses must meet, but there are plenty of resources and services to guide you through the process.

This guide is intended to serve as a general overview of what you’ll need to know and where assistance may be found when opening a business in Milton. We describe the process in a sequence of steps, though be aware that some steps may (and should) be taken simultaneously. We also include a few helpful tips and contact information to help expedite the process.

While setting up your business here, we would like you to be aware of a few things. Naturally, the City has certain standards and regulations in place to ensure quality development and safety. These include:

  • Zoning Approvals – Required to ensure that the type of business and the buildings are appropriate for the neighborhood. Other permits may be required for specific business types, such as, but not limited to restaurants.
  • Building Permits – Required to ensure compliance with State building and life safety requirements.
  • Certificate of Occupancy – Ensures that all the required improvements have been met and the building is ready to be occupied by your business.
  • Sign Permits – Requires for identification of your business. Both temporary and permanent signs require this permit.
  • Business License – Required to operate a business. There are four categories of business licenses in Milton:
    • Business with Gross Receipts
    • Home-Based Business
    • Professional Practioner
    • Business with No Gross Receipts

If you have questions or find that additional assistance is required, please contact please contact Zoning Manager Robyn MacDonald at robyn.macdonald@miltonga.gov.
