Home MenuPlan Review and Inspections
Milton's Fire Marshal is responsible for ensuring compliance with minimum fire safety standards on all new construction, as well as changes to existing commercial buildings pursuant to the Official Code of Georgia Title 25 and the rules of the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
All plans for new construction commercial buildings and certain types of residential occupancies must submitted to and approved by the Fire Marshal’s Office and Milton building officials.
All permits are now completed through the Milton CityView Web Portal.
During all phases of construction, a property must undergo periodic inspections by relevant code enforcement officials to ensure compliance with life-safety regulations and other building construction standards.
On new construction, this includes an 80 percent inspection (e.g. when the structure is about 80 percent complete). A final inspection for life-safety code compliance is also required in order for a Certificate of Occupancy to be issued. This inspection process is meant to ensure the safety and quality of construction consistent with the most current professional standards.
Additionally, any business that changes its occupancy type (e.g. a clothing store that becomes a restaurant) or performs any type of renovations must submit plans to the Fire Marshal’s Office and Milton building officials. City staff will then ensure any changes follow the current safety standards for that new use.
Plan reviews for both building code and Fire Marshal’s codes are coordinated through Milton's Building Department. Please call (678) 242-2545 to schedule a time.
