What do HOMEOWNERS need to know?

  • A tree removal permit is required for any tree 15” DBH (which stands for “diameter at breast height, the standardDBH.explainer.graphic for tree diameters measured at 4.5 feet above the ground) and larger. You calculate DBH my taking this measurement, then dividing the circumference of the trunk by 3.14 (or 22/7 or "pi.") In other words, if you have trees larger than that to remove, you'll need a permit.
  • Any small canopy tree 8” and larger -- such as a dogwood or redbud -- or any tree located within a landscape or stream buffer also needs a tree removal permit from the City of Milton.
  • You'll also need a permit for any tree location in a stream buffer or zoning buffer.
  • Residents can apply for a tree removal permit by filling out an application. This is available at City Hall or can be downloaded online HERE.
  • What will you need for the permit application?
    • Contact information for applicant/homeowner
    • Tree removal company information
    • A simple (hand-drawn) sketch showing the location of trees to be removed
    • List of the trees to be removed by species and size. If you don't know the species, please provide whatever info you can, like pine, hardwood, evergreen, etc.)
  • Completed applications should be submitted to the City Arborist:
    • Emailing them to arborist@miltonga.gov
    • Drop off the paperwork at City Hall, or
    • Mail to:
      City Arborist Sandra Dewitt
      City of Milton
      2006 Heritage Walk
      Milton, GA 30004
  • After the City Arborist reviews the tree removal permit application, the requirements for the permit to be approved will be emailed to the applicant, along with information on the required fees associated with it. In other words, you may be asked to plant new trees in place of the ones you’ve removed. Requirements are based on lot size, zoning issues, and your property’s existing canopy coverage. Consult the City Arborist for details.

What do DEVELOPERS need to know?

Horse Farm

  • Developers must show (in site plans) any trees 15” DBH or larger that will need to be removed or would be impacted for any proposed development activity. This includes for pools and additions.
  • Every site must maintain the minimum canopy coverage requirement based on zoning and lot size or the existing canopy coverage. Consult the City Arborist Sandra Dewitt at 678-242-2552 or arborist@miltonga.gov for these details.
  • One-third of canopy coverage must come from existing canopy. In other words, you can’t cut down all trees; at least one-third of the canopy coverage on a given site must remain there.
  • Costs and requirements vary by tree type. For example, replacement requirements for “Specimen Trees” shall be 150% of the square feet of tree canopy removed. "Specimen Trees" successfully conserved shall be given 25% additional tree canopy cover credit. Consult the City Arborist for details.
