On August 3, 2020, Mayor Lockwood and the City Council passed Milton’s new Tree Canopy Conservation Ordinance. Below is important information on the new ordinance. If you have questions, contact City Arborist Sandra DeWitt at arborist@miltonga.gov.
DeWitt held a workshop for homeowners on September 30, 2020. You can view her presentation by clicking HERE.
Then, on October 14 of that same year, she held another workshop -- this one targeted to those in Milton's development community, from builders to landscapers. That presentation can be viewed by clicking HERE, and you can watch video of this workshop by clicking HERE.

Why the new ordinance?
- To maintain Milton’s tree canopy and other positives tied to having a sufficient, diverse collection of trees
- To balance this with a recognition of pastures and farmland as core to the city’s heritage
- To have the least possible amount of regulation, simplifying and clarifying language in the City’s tree ordinance to make it easier to understand and apply
When does it take effect?
- The new Tree Canopy Conservation took effect immediately after it was passed.
- Until November 30, 2020, however, citizens can apply either that or the existing density-based tree ordinance.
- After that date – so from December 1, 2020, onward -- only the Tree Canopy Conservation Ordinance can be used.
