Accidents at Bethany Bend/Highway 9 plummet after City move

Post Date:01/17/2024 1:16 PM
Bethany Bend Highway 9 January 16.2024The City knew there was a problem where Bethany Bend meets Highway 9. So, this past summer, it acted. And that action led to drastically different – and impressively positive – results.

There was one vehicular accident at this intersection since the City installed signage on July 10, 2023, telling drivers not to turn right from Bethany Bend eastbound when there was a red light at that intersection (through the end of 2023). Compare that to seven accidents on this leg of the intersection (out of 16 overall) over the previous six months. And in 2022, there had been 10 on this leg (out of 20 overall at that intersection), making it one of the city’s highest accident intersections.

Milton’s Public Works team had studied those previous statistics and devised the no-right-turn-on-red plan. Yes, the tradeoff was that traffic might not flow as quickly at that intersection. And yes, things could change later with the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Highway 9 project. Still, the City chose to be proactive while vowing to continually evaluate the overall impacts.

From a safety perspective, there has been a HUGE decrease in accidents since the new sign went up. We want to thank all our drivers for paying heed to the new signage and making a difference while doing so. Together, we’re making Milton’s roads safer!
